Land Clearing Service Area: Huntsville and Madison County

We connect property owners with independent land clearing pros serving Huntsville and nearby communities in Madison County. Which government office handles your parcel depends on the town or county line, so here is how the area is split.

Communities we serve

  • Huntsville. The City of Huntsville has its own Engineering Division, Grading Permits and burning rules. See the city's grading permit page and burning notice.
  • Madison. A separate city with its own Planning department and zoning ordinance. A third-party summary of its code says no permit is needed to remove a tree from an established residential lot, but development sites need an approved site plan or land-disturbance permit (summary; verify with Madison Planning).
  • Harvest. An unincorporated community in the northwestern part of Madison County, so county offices rather than a town hall apply (reference).
  • Meridianville. An unincorporated community north of Huntsville, with a 2020 census population of 8,209 (reference).
  • Owens Cross Roads. Incorporated as a town in 1967 and redesignated a city in October 2022, with its own mayor-council government (reference).
  • Hazel Green. An unincorporated community about 15 miles north of Huntsville (reference).

Coverage for any specific address depends on the pro who takes your request. Enter your zip or neighborhood in the form and we will pass it along.

Town pages

Each of these has its own page with local detail:

Inside a city versus unincorporated county

If your address says Harvest, Meridianville or Hazel Green, that is usually a mailing label, not a government. Those communities are unincorporated, and unincorporated land falls under Madison County. Madison County Public Works enforces the county subdivision regulations outside city limits (county Public Works), and the county has a floodplain development permit requirement for special flood hazard areas (county floodplain document). Within a city such as Huntsville, Madison or Owens Cross Roads, that city's rules apply instead. A parcel can also sit just across a city line from where its mailing address suggests, so ask the pro to confirm the jurisdiction on the first call.

State rules apply everywhere

No matter which side of a city line you are on, ADEM's construction stormwater permit applies once a site disturbs one acre or more, or is part of a larger common plan (ADEM general permit). Alabama 811 locate rules apply statewide (Alabama 811). And the Alabama Forestry Commission handles burn permits across Madison County, though city and county law may be stricter (AFC).

Ground conditions across the area

Madison County sits in the Tennessee Valley, where Alabama Extension describes limestone-derived, mainly red clayey soils with silt loam surfaces; the USDA description of the Decatur series notes a red, clay-rich subsoil (soil series). Expect red clay when the vegetation comes off, in town or out. Slopes and creek corridors vary more than the soil does, which is why a pro should see the site.

What to expect from a first call

The pro will usually ask for the street address or nearest crossroads, whether the lot is inside city limits, roughly how many acres need work, and what is growing there. They may ask for photos of the access gate and any slopes or wet areas. Properties in Harvest, Meridianville and Hazel Green are often larger parcels, while infill lots in Huntsville and Madison are tighter, so equipment and access vary. That is general experience in the trade rather than a sourced local statistic, but it is why a site visit usually comes before a firm price.

Services in the area

Lot clearing for building sites and yards, brush clearing for privet and kudzu, forestry mulching for grinding in place, and stump removal as a follow-up.
